Landscape Architecture

Nestled in a remote grassy valley two hours west of Austin and San Antonio, Frio Cañon is a private family compound that celebrates outdoor living, connection to place, and the quiet majesty of the Texas Hill Country. Located within the 2,000-acre Frio Canon “legacy community,” the project sits along a wide, spring-fed stretch of the Frio River, ideal for swimming, fishing, kayaking, and relaxing under the canopy of native cypress and cedar. Designed in close collaboration with Cuppett Kilpatrick Architects, the landscape amplifies the architecture’s intent: to draw residents outdoors, into nature, and toward one another. A central lawn courtyard creates a social heart, while decomposed granite pathways and elevated boardwalks link the main house, guest casitas, and river’s edge in a way that encourages exploration and movement across the site. The planting palette leans heavily on native species including grasses, wildflowers, and woodland understory designed for seasonal change, wildlife attraction, and low-maintenance beauty. Building orientations were carefully considered to maximize long views across the floodplain while preserving privacy from adjacent sites. Outdoor gathering spaces, including an open-air kitchen and riverside deck, foster a lifestyle rooted in wellness, connection, and stewardship. Lionheart’s approach at Frio Cañon reflects a core belief: that private residential landscapes can be both personal and ecologically principled. The result is a timeless retreat that enhances the land’s natural rhythms while offering a legacy experience for generations to come.
