With the TxDOT proposal to widen and lower portions of the Austin I-35 corridor, the City has an opportunity to change the landscape of Central Austin through the construction of “caps” that will make important strides in addressing growth challenges regarding traffic congestion, public safety, mobility efficiency, and quality of life for Austin residents. The concepts produced for this project envision a new future with community benefits that celebrate and connect all past, present, and future Austinites. Significant coordination with UT Austin was necessary for the success of this project.

Lionheart utilized feedback from the public, the Community Steering Committee, and the Technical Advisory Committee to develop project goals, design concepts, and design strategies. The final plans included the East Avenue Cultural Trail, which will stretch along the entire I-35 corridor to give multi-modal access North-South and also educate the users on what histories, cultures, and points of interest are to the East and West of them. Lionheart also designed concept plans for Woodland through 11th and 12th St. caps, each with multiple alternatives ranging from High Intensity to Low Intensity site usage. Lionheart held true to the project goals of Equity & Inclusivity, Economic Affordability & Vitality, Community & Cultural Narratives, Health & Human Nature, Environmental Sustainability, and Safety & Connectivity by creating spaces that have opportunities for everyone.
